No Heat or Hot Water
There can be many reasons for a failure of your unit to produce heat or hot water. However, there are a couple of simple items to check before reaching in despair for your cell phone to call the RV Heat Guy for help.
1. Make sure your unit is turned on. (Either the diesel or electric switch, or both). Believe it or not, this is the most common cause of a lack of heat or hot water. Once the switch is on, it will take a few minutes for the unit to come up to temperature.
2) Make sure you have enough diesel fuel in your tank. The units will usually not fire if there is only a 1/4 tank or less of diesel remaining.
Heat in some of the coach, but not all areas
A number of issues can cause a lack of heat in one or more zones in your coach. Check first to be sure that the thermostat for each zone is turned on and set to call for heat (rather than cooling). Also check the level of the antifreeze in the overflow bottle of your heater and be sure it is at the appropriate level, then call us for additional troubleshooting.
I see black smoke from the exhaust
Black smoke from the burner usually means you need to make an immediate call for service as it is an indication of a serious problem. However, you can check the following items first:
1. Low voltage can cause the burner to spew black smoke. Plug into shore power or fire up your generator (if you are dry camping) and see if the problem stops. If it does, you may have a problem with low voltage from your batteries.
2. Shut the heater off and allow its exhaust to cool. Carefully inspect the heater's exhaust for damage - a bent or dented exhaust pipe can cause the burner to produce black smoke and will require replacement.
I see blue or white smoke from the exhaust
The Webasto burner can occasionally belch a little blue or white smoke from the exhaust on start up or shut down. (This should never last more than 5-10 seconds)
